Safford To Black Jack Campground (by Terry)

Safford AZ to Black Jack Campground Apache National Forest AZ

The calm after the storm
Once again we delayed our departure due to cold. We did not delay it by much, but this was a big change to our first days of riding through the California and Arizona deserts where early was the key to beating the heat. Now we found ourselves digging out all of our warm clothing. I had some concern for our nights destination since it was at 6,600 feet and the low was predicted to be around 45 degrees. We did not bring along our standard backpack sleeping bags that keep us warm well below 32 degrees. Instead we had opted to take a couple of old down comforters that are destined for the Goodwill once we get home. Since it was only one night I figured I could survive any cold. Royce, always the optimist had no concerns at all. His lack of concern would make it easier for me to steal his blankets  in the cold of the night. Again Royce rode out a couple of hours with me and turned back to do what has now become the customary moving the car forward. The ride had a good climb to get to our destination. As is usually the case the climb came with beautiful views. Royce caught me in the car as I was nearing the top of the grade. I am always happy to see him. The fact that he is bringing me food and water makes this especially true. As I crested the summit of the climb
I saw a several Mazda Miata's pulling in the turnout where Royce had parked. Royce was busy taking pictures of me and had no idea what was going on behind him. He turned around and was surprised to see that he was surrounded by Miata's.  Mind you this was a pretty quiet rode, so this was quite the sight. As it turned out it was a group from Texas who were on a road trip journey of their own. They relayed that sadly a friend of theirs who was suppose to be with them on the trip had suddenly died the night  before from a heart attack. He was only 54. They acknowledged and applauded our live life to the fullest attitude, as tomorrow may never come. Yes, we agreed and applauded them for continuing their journey with heavy hearts for the loss of their friend.

Pedaling for the summit

Our campground was not far from the summit. It was empty except for the campground host. We set up camp and used the extra time we had to rehabilitate our bikes and gear. No, it was not too cold. In fact we were very warm that night. Leaving the next morning was another story. To be continued in the next post.
