Hello Mississippi


We knew the rain would clear and today would bring new sights and adventures. All of our equipment dried nicely overnight and we were road ready again this morning. Today we crossed into Mississippi not long after leaving Bogalusa. The first 20 miles were on Hwy 26. The road had a fair amount of traffic on it at 630 am, but I made it into Poplarville before the traffic got to crazy.  Once I left Poplarville the route turned onto private forested areas. There were homes spaced out about every 3 miles and very little traffic on the road and the roads were nice. Wow, this was like a dream or maybe this is what I had hoped for all along.  As I rode along the area reminded me of when I use to ride up through the forests above Blue Lake CA (on the North Coast). Those were my early days of bike riding and probably the ones that helped create the passion I developed for it. I was so happy for this ride in my head I deemed it "best of the trip" 40 miles into it. As I came across an intersection I saw two cyclists along side the road. Thinking they may have a flat I slowed to survey their needs. No needs they were just waiting for a friend. We chatted a bit and since they were headed in my direction we all rode together. They were all locals out for a morning ride. We had a great time exchanging information and telling stories. Royce was en route to me.I

thought he would get a kick out of me hitching along with the locals. It took him a bit to decipher the group coming toward him, but he did notice that I had some how found a group to ride in. Royce added in to the group and we split off in our own direction soon afterwards. They were very nice southern gentleman and I was glad to have met up with them. Royce had parked the car at a the Airey campground. We rode there and had a nice lunch. A lot of the ride after lunch was through the DeSoto National Forest. The roads were consistent throughout the day, good pavement and quiet. We both really enjoyed the ride. We lodged near Biloxi MS. We were glad that we had made the effort to drive into Biloxi. We had a great dinner and liked what we say of the area.

FUN FACTS We have been back from our Adventure of a Lifetime/Ride Across America for one week now. I have a lot of thoughts in my head that I have wanted to convey and this seems like a fitting milestone to put some closing thoughts down on paper. First the trivial numbers game. During our great adventure here are some fun facts Terry rode Ruby (Bicycle) 2,689 miles and Red Ryder (Recumbent Trike) 214 miles for a total of 2,902 miles. Royce rode Stripes(Bicycle) 1,520 miles and his nameless Trike 100 miles for a total of 1,620 miles. Spent items We started in San Diego CA. (THANK YOU  Renee Damon for seeing us off and the great pictures) and ended in St. Augustine FL 41 days later. During that time between all of our bikes and trikes we replaced 4 tires,5 tubes, 1 set of brake pads, 1 bicycle chain and a set of pedals. Alachua FL to Palatka Fl May 28, 2015 78 miles Well, Royce and I believe that we have finally got our program figured out. We are like a well oiled machine when it comes to our daily routine. So....I guess we are ready to start this RIDE ACROSS AMERICA. Seems like the last several days just get better and better for ride conditions and scenery. Today about 30 miles of the route was on paved bike trails. The first one started out of Gainsville and ended in Hawthorne. It went through the Sweetwater Wetlands Park which has the Alachua Sink in it.It also transversed the Prairie Creek Conservation Area and  the Phifer Flatwoods Preserve. It was so nice riding on this 16 mile trail. I met Royce just out of Putnam Hall and we rode on another trail for about another 14 miles. Palatka is an interesting community. Do Not Stop Pedaling

DO NOT STOP PEDALING What? Why? You know that you could drive across America....right? These and many others were the remarks made when I announced I would be riding my bicycle across America.  I never thought it would be easy, but I always thought it would be fun. As a kid I loved riding my Sears bike everywhere. I made my ten speed road bike into a cross bike long before the mountain bike was born. I left for college in the Fall of 1982, but before I did I bought my first "real bike". I went to a real bike store and bought a real performance bike. It was a blue Nishiki "mens" frame, meaning there was a top tube. This was opposed to the step through bike that was known as the womens bike.  It was a slightly used bike and a bit too big for me, but it was mine. I attended school at Humboldt State University on the North Coast of California. This is not a warm place and I lived 15 miles north of the University. I would bring my bike with me to sch...
