Kountze TX to DeRidder LA

85 Miles

Our daily routines have been serving us well. Many days ago be bumped our ride time up to sunrise. It seems our greatest hope of avoiding being drenched from afternoon thunderstorms is to set out as early as possible. We have a least avoided most of the heavy rain by doing this. We have our breakfast in the hotel room every morning. Rotating through a few hot breakfast cereals and protein shakes has worked well. We have gotten very efficient with moving our portable house in and out of hotel rooms. We were both excited for today because we were leaving Texas and crossing into Louisiana. A state line crossing is always exciting. Personally I have seen enough of Texas and yes there is a lot of Texas to see. I have been looking forward to seeing some greenery. The one thing we have struggled with since the trip began is what works best for Royce to get some riding in and still meet my support needs. We have decided having him leave when I leave works the best. He goes out to a town about more than half way out ( depending on the length of the ride) and rides back to me. We stop at the car have some lunch and then he rides out the other end of the route(to some point). Today we wanted to make sure we were together at the state line crossing, which would be after lunch. The state line is the Sabine River. As we approached the river a few rain drops began to fall. I had been riding for four hours. Now that we are about to leave Texas, it would like to bid us a farewell. The skies rumbled and soon after we finished all of our photo taking it began to rain. Welcome to Louisiana!!! We continued along because that is what you do. Unless it is an absolute down pour which would cause some safe riding problems, we just keep going. Not long into the rain part of the ride a gentleman in a pickup with Texas license plates pulled up along side us. He shouted out his window...Ya' all are fixin to get real wet soon and he offered us a ride. Royce politely  said thanks,,,but no thanks. A very kind offer, the gentleman just did not know we were on a mission to just keep pedaling.
