Silver City to Caballo Lake
April 30, 2015
72 miles, 5572' Elevation Gain
I have been thinking about this ride since the day I mapped it. It is a big ride through the Gila National Forest, over the top of Emory pass and then down to Caballo Lake. It looked so dynamic on the map. From elevation changes to the sites to be seen, I was excited for the day. The Bicycle
Race was taking place on part of the route that I was riding. We decided that I would ride out early and Royce would stay back and take care of some logistics and meet me later on the route. It was amazing to see the Chino open pit copper mine. I guess there is a lot you could say about this. It was once the largest open pit mine in the world. It was originated in 1910. The rush to pull precious metals from the earth has left some significant scars on the land.
Moving on up the road I enjoyed the transition of climate and vegetation. Before I knew it I was riding along a nicely shaded road with a stream running next to it. There were lots of camping and picnic areas along the way. The traffic was light and oh yeah there was one big climb as well.
Once I made it to the top of Emory Pass I stopped at the overlook and had lunch. Royce and stopped earlier in the ride and then moved forward to Caballo Lake so that he could ride back to me. Unfortunately a large fire occurred here in 2010, but the views were still beautiful and well worth the climb.
Royce caught met up with me about 10 miles from the lake and we had a great ride into our campsite.
