Kerrville TX to Dripping Springs TX

75 miles

The maneuvering of routes and lodging actually ended up putting us closer to our rest day city of Austin. Since we could not camp at Pedernales State Park as we had planned, we decided to ride to Dripping Springs TX. The only problem was, Dripping Springs had very limited lodging and none available for this day. Dripping Springs is only about 30 miles from Austin. Royce suggested that we just pick up in Dripping Springs, drive to Austin and then come back the next day to ride from Dripping Springs to Cedar Creek (below Austin). It all sound kinda crazy, but for various reasons this is what we were having to do. I wanted to ride into Austin, which would be 105 mile ride. My ability to make that ride would be dependent on the weather, on this day the wind would be the deciding factor. I rode on Hwy 290 for the entire route. This was not necessarily the most scenic route, but we were having to resort to efficiency at this point. I rode on the outskirts of Fredricksburg, which seemed to be a nice town. Our next stop was Johnson City. Royce parked at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Park and rode back to me. When I had made the turn to the south towards Dripping Springs, I began seeing farmers fruit stands. They all advertised PEACHES. I am not a huge peach fan, but after seeing those signs mile after mile, I decided I needed to buy a peach for our lunch. I told myself the next peach stand on my side of the road, I am stopping and buying a peach. Of course after that I never saw another peach stand. I met up with Royce 10 miles from Johnson City and I told him of my peach buying desire. He said there are not any fruit stands from here on in. Besides he informed me peaches are not in season right now. Those signs really work. I will probably want a peach for the next several months. We got to Johnson City and had lunch in the National Park. The remainder of the Two Fat Guys ribs were devoured. Once we left Johnson City the wind had increased significantly. Royce turned back about 5 miles out of Johnson City. I kept on riding toward Dripping Springs. I really wanted to ride into Austin, but as the day went on that seemed less likely to happen. The wind gusts had started become more frequent and intense. They were mostly coming from the side. Riding a straight line was becoming challenging. The over achiever in me kept saying you can do it. My sinuses and dry mouth were saying you have had enough. Dripping Springs was in my sights when I decided I was okay with not being an over achiever today. Our plan was to make it to Dripping Springs all along. If I stop now, Royce can pick me up and I can be in a hotel in Austin by 3 pm. We had been wanting to wash the car off for some time as it was looking a little road weary. I stopped at a car wash where Royce met me. We washed the car off, one chore down we do not have to do on our day off. Off to Austin we went.
